Madison was killed in viet Nam and is still listed as missing in action. There is a building named after him in I think Fort Benning Ga. I first met Madison in third grade at Glenside elementary . He was sent behind enemy lines and never returned.
Humbled and saddened at the sacrifice of all those who served. To this day I still haven't been able to visit the wall in DC. Tried three times, closest I ever got was the book and could go no further....too many "ghosts"......did see the smaller traveling wall a few years back and was able to spend some time.....God bless you soldier, and all who served.
I visited the traveling wall in Tallahassee a couple of years back. They made the entire area "hallowed" ground and it was an almost tangible feeling. I was really surprised at how emotional I became when I touched his name. It brought back a flood of memories.
In doing a little research, it appears Madison Strohlein was quite the soldier. As described in a book SOG by John L. Plaster, in chapter 16, "Fighting Soldiers From The Sky" on page 317 he was on a SOG (Special Operations Group) HALO mission on 22 June 1971 that led to his demise. As Guy Collier shared there is a building in Ft Bragg NC (US Army Jump School) called Strohlein Hall, named in his honor. He was quite a man.
I attach a link describing the SOG HALO jump and extraction of 22 June 1971.
